When in February 2010, Lucia Nimcova went to Kenya for the first time she reconfigured her image of Africa. African Thunderstorm is about experiencing life in Kenya as foreigner, more explicitly as a white foreigner. As Nimcova explains, skin colour has never been a relevant aspect to her identity. In Kenya, however, she suddenly started to experience on her own body that the colour of skin is considerably signifying, though it is not exactly clear from the start what kind of significance exactly is related to it. For instance, she was seen as one of the Westerners who colonized Africa, although as an Eastern European, she or even the country where she was born, had little to do with that. The work consists of several elements such as a booklet, with an interview of a friend of Nimcova who worked in Kenya for a NGO. Furthermore, photographs collected by the artist are attached to the wall, depicting young Kenyans staging themselves the way they would like to be seen. As a part of African Thunderstorm project she has also transformed a well-known piece of poetry - An African Thunderstorm - into a stamp poem by commissioning local artisans in Kenya. Nimcova wants the viewer of her work in SMBA to experience the use of the stamps as an important beaurocratic symbol, by means of making a stamped poem. She invites the visitors to take a copy of the booklet, stamp a poem on it and take it with them in order to read the interview on occasion. >>> lucia nimcova >>> smba sittcomm.award at V8 Gallery24/09/2010 - 16/10/2010![]() Works of Ivars Gravlejs - My Newspaper and screening of other sittcomm.award shortlisted artists will be on display at V8 Gallery, Cologne. >>> sittcomm.award >>> ivars gravlejs RUSYNS / RUSNACI - exhibition09/09/2010, 19:00opening of the exhibition at Tabacka, Kosice, SK ![]() We have been invited to exhibit project RUSNACI / RUSYNS in Tabacka, Kosice.
